A place for friends, not followers.

PalAbout was created by science fiction author and social media personality J.B. Ryder with the sole goal of reclaiming social media for Gen Z. No more doom-scrolling. No more watching people fake their lives for clicks. No more days of 12-hour screen time.

This might just be the only social media app that doesn’t want you staring at your phone.

Putting the ‘social’ back in social media.

PalAbout’s main purpose is to take the experience of social media and bring it back to reality.

  • You want to add someone? You either need to ‘fistbump’ them in-person or be introduced in the app by a mutual friend (no more creeps stalking your page!)

  • You want to make hanging out in-person easier? PalAbout gives you more control over events you create than any other app and keeps all the memories made at a given gathering in one shared ‘collabsule.’ PalAbout also makes use of functionality often used to keep you on your phone to make sure you consistently see your friends in-person.

  • You want to find stuff to do in your area? You can create and discover public events in your area (house parties, kickbacks, D&D meet ups, ritualistic sacrifices of cantaloupes under a full moon, etc).

  • You want to create shared memories with your friends? You can do so with shared posts known as ‘collabsules.’

What Makes PalAbout Different?

  • There’s no account search functionality within PalAbout. If you’re friends with someone, it’s because you’re really friends.

We’ve achieved this effect by limiting the addition of friends to two methods:

    1. Some apps use QR codes as a friending option, but ours are unique. Our ‘fistbump’ functionality creates QR codes that expire in ten seconds, guaranteeing that all users who scan them and establish a connection with you are people you’ve actually been in person with.

    2. We know you’ve scrolled through the ‘people you might know’ area of other social apps and seen ‘20+ mutual friends!’ next to usernames you’ve never seen in your life. This is one of J.B. Ryder’s personal pet peeves. On PalAbout, one of your friends can consciously introduce you to someone else they have added on the app, sending you both an ‘introduction request.’ Only after you’ve both accepted will you become friends.

However, note that in an effort to ease users into the app, we generate a unique friending code for users at the moment of registration that can be inputted by up to three users they choose to establish a friendship immediately (this code expires three days after registration).

  • Whereas other social media apps have an ‘explore’ page, we have a ‘social life’ page. The key difference is that the core of our app is based in the real world. On this page, you can browse events created by other users or make your own (public or private).

This is one of the most functionality useful parts of the app.

Ordinary, people planning hangouts or parties would coordinate with other hosts in a text group chat, send invites haphazardly through some other social media app, have to trust that attendees won’t randomly invite more people, and scramble to find who took which cool photo/video after the event.

PalAbout allows event and hangout creators to manage how people are invited, track who invites who, communicate with attendees through announcements and included event chats, and have all photos and videos taken at the event stored in a shared ‘collabsule’ that saves to each attendees’ profile at the end of the event.

  • Social media apps make use of all sorts of game mechanics to keep you on your phone (ever sent photos to someone just to see that little flame next to their username or the number on your profile go up?).

PalAbout, by contrast, uses similar functionality to keep you consistently seeing your friends in-person. Trust us—you’ll know when you’re drifting apart from a friend and need to reach out.

  • Stalkers are scary. Catfishing is scary. PalAbout is a platform where the only people who can see your profile are the people you want seeing it.
